High Alert in Malappuram District
The Kerala government has confirmed a new case of Nipah virus infection in a 14-year-old boy from Malappuram district. The boy is currently under treatment at a private hospital and is on a ventilator.

The health department has advised people to avoid consuming fruits that are half-eaten or bitten by birds or animals. Additionally, fruits should be washed properly before consumption, and beverages like toddy stored in open containers should be avoided.

Residents in the Pandikkad locality and nearby hospitals are urged to wear masks in public spaces and refrain from visiting patients in hospitals. A three-kilometer radius around the epicenter will be strictly monitored, and restrictions will be imposed to curb the spread of the virus.
Past Nipah Outbreaks in Kerala
Nipah virus outbreaks have previously been reported in Kozhikode district in 2018, 2021, and 2023, and in Ernakulam district in 2019. Antibodies for the virus have been detected in bats in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, and Ernakulam districts. The 2018 outbreak resulted in at least 17 deaths in Kerala.
